A to Z:
Concept to your
door step!

There are graphic design firms that develop a design, put it on a computer diskette, and say "Voila! Go get it published." Then there are firms that know that life is not that simple, and offer a guiding hand to their clients throughout all phases of their project, from concept generation to pre-press, from press to post-press. At RGI, we offer a full range of production assistance services to our clients.

Taking a design through its production stages is no simple task. We know too well that what the client sees on their computer monitors is rarely what the designer sees on his/her expensive, color-calibrated monitor. In fact, in spite of all the recent developments in color profiling technologies, what you see on any RGB (Red, Green, and Blue) monitor is never what you get after production on a CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black) printing press. Turning a design into a final product, the client must deal with many complex, technical issues including:

    Pre-press issues

  • Identifying the appropriate production media (e.g., paper stock and ink types) that enhance the image and the message, that complement other jobs.
  • Identifiying potential printers with technologies and experience required for the job,
  • Clearly defining the job specifications to the printers and finishers,
  • Researching the reliability and performance history of the potential printers,
  • Obtaining quotes or estimates from printers and selecting a printer,
  • Ensuring the job is prepared to the manufacturing specifications of the selected printer and the color gamut of the specific press on which the job will be produced, either with the help of the original designer or of the printer's pre-press and manufacturing staff,
  • Ensuring that the printer understands the requirements that must be met for minimum satisfactory performance,
  • Checking color break, rendition, and fidelity via digital and analog proofs, and revising either the design files or the films as necessary,
  • Checking the setup of the printing press on the production day to fine tune ink amounts on press and identify and resolve any plate registration problems, and
  • Checking the quality of the final product before accepting delivery.
Ideally, these critical issues should not be resolved without the strict supervision and control of the graphic designer. Unfortunately, in many graphic design firms, the designers say "Hey! We are artists. Period. If we liked production, we would have studied engineering!" Or in many other firms, the pre-press and production stages are delegated to a "Production Manager" or a "Clent Rep" who acts as a liaison between the designer and the printer, often making undesirable concessions to the printer, unaware of the spiritual subtleties of the design in the mind of the designer.
